The problem was that when the container was inserted, I couldn't see how many drops were dispensed. The thick solution stayed mostly in the outer canal, and caused severe irritation. Nevertheless, because I trusted the doctor, I continued with the prescribed treatment until the following Wednesday with no improvement. I made an appointment with my internist, who took one look and told me that it was simply was impacted against my eardrum and could easily be removed (he couldn't see my eardrum past the wax). There was no infection and no drops were necessary. He referred me to an oto specialist in his building who didn't take my insurance. Another day wasted. I have an appointment with an oto specialist close to my home on Thursday 7/23, who will easily remove the wax and restore my hearing and general comfort.
