Went in to see a doctor on Wednesday for a sinus infection/bronchitis because my regular internist office was booked for the day and I was desperate. I was seen by Dr. Goldberger who (after I explained to him I cannot take Augmentin because of an allergy, but I am ok with Amoxicillin or the z-pac), told me the next choice after Augmentin was Doxycycline. I was very uncomfortable with his decision, especially after the reaction I previously had to Augmentin. Again, I asked for a z-pack or Amoxicillian and was told that Doxy is the next on the list of antibiotics to treat my sinus infection. So off I go with my script for Doxycycline. Upon swallowing my first dose the next morning, I promptly became violently ill, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. About 20 mins after that my entire body was covered in a red rash and hives. So I call Doctors Express to speak to a doctor. I spoke to a woman doctor who was on duty, and explained the situation to her. I also told her that anytime I have ever had a sinus infection or bronchitis, my regular doctor has ALWAYS given me Amoxicillin and I have NEVER had any issues. She could care less about what I was telling her, and she was so inconsiderate and condescending toward me. She I have been doing this for 25 years and this is what the CDC recommends for your symptoms. If you want Amoxicillin you will need to go see your own doctor. I'm sorry, but I am an educated woman, I am very familiar with what medications my body can and cannot tolerate, I have had sinus infections and bronchitis before this, and honestly, I just know my body. She absolutely refused to listen to my plea, but kept reminding me that I have been doing this for 25 years... and told me she is happy to call in another script, this one for Levaquin (which I promptly looked up and the side effects are exactly the same as the other two antibiotics I am allergic to) so I declined the new script. Then she proceeds to tell me I should just let it run its course anyway, do a neti pot, take Benedryl for the HORRENDOUS rash and hives, go to an allergist and get a scratch test to find out what i am allergic to and to google sinus surgeries so I can watch a video of exactly what comes out of someone's sinuses when they are impacted. IS this woman for real? Oh, and if my tongue begins swelling or my throat feels like its closing up,i should go directly to the ER....just what I wanted to hear! I repeatedly took the Benedryl all day and night Thursday and Friday which made me a complete zombie. On Friday Doctors Express called to check on me I explained that I haven't taken the Doxy in more than 24hrs, yet I still have the rash, and the bronchitis is getting worse. She told me it can take FIVE DAYS for the Doxy to get out of my system. Today I woke up, once again covered head to toe in the red rash and hives, coughing and wheezing and barely able to breathe. Thankfully, a doctor in my internist's office could see me immediately. So, it turns out, I have bronchitis (which I knew) and my doctor could not believe i was given doxycycline, and then attempted Levaquin. She informed me that Doxy is given to patients with Lyme's Disease and to prevent Malaria...oh yes, and for gonorrhea and chlamydia (seriously?) it is NOT prescribed for something as easy to treat as bronchitis or a sinus infection. In the end my doctor gave me Amoxicillian and an inhaler for the bronchitis and now because of the Doctors Express debacle, I have to take a Medrol steroid and Zyrtec daily, plus Benedryl at night to get rid of the horrible rash. I lost a week of work, days and nights of anxiety and suffering that were completely unnecessary. I am not someone to write a negative review unless completely warranted and I understand doctors are human too, however, this was unacceptable on all accounts. I will NEVER set foot in Doctors Express again, and if anyone with a semi-serious ailment needs medical care, I strongly recommend you stick with your PCP or even going the ER before trusting your health to a doctor here. I don't even want to think about what could have happened to me (i.e.: anaphylaxis, pneumonia or worse) had I not listened to my body, used common sense and had been as vigilant as I was to get myself taken care of properly. Now....I can only imagine what kind of mess I will have to deal with when my insurance/bill is submitted. My husband was at this same Doctors Express last year and we ended up with a $500 bill....for conjunctivitis, apparently they aren't very good at proper coding and billing for patients visits either...
